The life of Shadow

Shadow's plight came to our attention when Lorraine, one of our Trustees, had a call from a friend to say that a lovely German Shepherd girl was desperate for a safe place following concerns for her wellbeing.  Shadow was being kept outside and her needs were not being met at all.  She was suffering from a flea allergy and her body condition was quite poor.  Lorraine took Shadow into her care on our behalf, and we popped her along to the vet for a health check as there was hair loss on her back and muscle loss on her back end.

Mandy and Steve met Shadow towards the end of November 2024 after she came into the care of PAWS. It was mutual love at first sight for all.  Off Shadow went to a better life, and following lots of TLC, she immediately began to show signs of improvement, both in her demeanour and in her physical appearance.  Shadow enjoyed pottering around the stables and the fields at the farm, which was now her new home. Cuddling up by the log burner in the evenings with her new family, Shadow soon made herself at home.

Following her first Christmas in her new home Shadow continued to show fantastic improvement and was enjoying life with Mandy and Steve.  Roll on the beginning of January and Shadow was officially adopted and the PAWS’ team cheered loudly that she’d found her final forever home.

Tragically, following a vet visit, Mandy and Steve discovered that Shadow has a splenic tumour which was just devastating news for Mandy and Steve and for everyone who knows this wonderful girl.  Shadow is the most wonderful loving and gentle dog, despite her previous troubles. She has brought so much joy to her new humans and we are all incredibly sad that her time with them is now cut short.

Mandy and Steve have been making the most of the very limited time they have left with Shadow and are taking her (and new girl Ella – a PAWS’ foster) out for as many enjoyable experiences as possible. Mandy and Steve had offered to help out by fostering a German Shepherd puppy before they learned of Shadow's condition and Ella was already being fostered at the far by Steve and Mandy. Both dogs get along really well and they love being at the farm and setting off to different places.
