Dear little Dulcie came into our care with Milton, her older male housemate. Both weren't in tip top condition, requiring attention to their coats and general health such as dental care and body condition. Dulcie settled in with her foster carer but from the start wasn't the most enthusiastic eater. We tried several different types of wet food including chicken and tuna to entice her into eating more frequently, but she continued to lose weight from the time of her arrival with PAWS. Dulcie was the sweetest girl and very affectionate with people. Dulcie wasn't microchipped or vaccinated and was booked in for a dental as well, as her teeth weren't in good condition. Unfortunately, following further weight loss, as Dulcie wasn't eating, a further blood test was taken to see if there was any other underlying problem (we originally thought it might have been her teeth).
The poor girl had an infection in her sinuses when she came in and required antibiotics and steroids prior to going back for dental, jabs etc. Because of her very flat almost inverted nose.
This delayed any other treatment as she could barely breathe. We would have been happier to have been able to get her seen to earlier.
So general health check at vet, including treatment for her breathing, bloods to check both cats health, then wait on results and improvement in infection.
We had to return to the vets with Dulcie as she was not eating, when weighed, she had lost weight. Milton went back for his vaccinations etc, but Dulcie's bloods had come back and a marker was found. Dulcie was still not eating and our vet advised that the kindest thing to do was to let her go. She had lost further weight and still was not eating. To add to all this, a growth was found. The bloods were fairly unremarkable apart from one marker for raised creatine. Kirsty the vet wasn't happy with this as it indicated something was amiss. It turns out that poor Dulcie had a small mass in her pancreas which would have been fatal. We took the sad decision to let Dulcie go as she was starving to death and it wasn't kind to keep her going. We are very glad that Dulcie had some fabulous one-on-one attention from her foster carer Shirley and that she was groomed and loved for the short time she had with her. Everyone at PAWS was very upset especially Shirley who had become very fond of both Milton and Dulcie.

Being involved with animal rescue is tough and all endings are not as we would wish. We never fail to be saddened by the loss of a dog or cat.
RIP Dulcie and fly high over the rainbow bridge.
